Jailbirds:

FAQ:

What is Jail-N-Bail?

At the DBSC Jail-N-Bail, volunteer "jailbirds" serve time in the DBSC mock jail. "Prisoners" are arraigned before a volunteer judge on trumped-up, outlandish charges, such as "having a soft heart for Deaf-Blind people." They are then sentenced to spend an hour or so in "the slammer" to raise bail in the form of donations to DBSC.

The jail will be set up at St. Patrick's Cathedral on April 23rd, the day of the arrest. DBSC police force "arrest" and escort the "prisoner" to "jail", where the "jailbird" is formally "charged" and tried. If found guilty (count on it), the "jailbird" is sentenced to raise bail.

The "bail" will vary depending on the "charge."

If you live out of state, or are unavailable to be arrested on April 23rd, we can still arrest you! You can become a virtual "prisoner." Our DBSC police force will throw you in our virtual "slammer." Your family and friends can go to your prisoner page and donate directly to your bail! We will mail your t-shirt and certificate of pardon to you.

  • Misdemeanor = $100 bail
  • A Felony = $500 bail
  • DBSC Most Wanted = $1500 bail

The "jailbird" joins other "prisoners" in a specially constructed cell, complete with pledge form and a telephone or VP to call friends, relatives and colleagues. At the end of the "sentence," the "jailbird" is released and receives an official pardon certificate as well as a Jail-N-Bail t-shirt. The "incarcerations" will last between 1 and 2 hours.

If you are interested in volunteering for the event, our judge will also be handing down sentences of "Community Service Hours." You will be charged to complete your hours as well as pay a $10 fine. When your time is complete you will receive a certificate as well as a T-shirt.

If you come to visit with out "prisoners" you can "bribe" the guards for special treatment of your friend or family member. You can even buy them bread and water or other treats.

What if I live out of state or I am unavailable for the arrest?

We can still arrest you!! You can become a virtual "prisoner." Our DBSC police force will throw you in our virtual "slammer." Your family and friends can go to your prisoner page and donate directly to your bail! We will mail your t-shirt and your certificate of pardon to you.

Donations - Raising Bail

"Prisoners" are encouraged to begin raising bail even before the "arrest." Once you complete a few simple steps, you'll be ready to raise money online, offline or both! If you fundraise online, it's as simple as sending out an e-mail (see "How do I raise money online?")! You can send e-mails to family, friends and associates to ask them to sponsor you. Once you've signed up as many sponsors as you possibly can, get ready to be arrested. You're going to have a wonderful time!

Remember, the more money you raise online ahead of time, the less time you have to spend in jail.

How do I raise money online?

Once you register for DBSC Jail-N-Bail, you'll have access to fundraising tips to help you get the word out about your efforts. Be sure to send your photograph and a personal message to JNB@seattledbsc.org. We will post them on your personalized Jail-N-Bail page. Your personal message can include:

  • Why you are a part of the fundraiser
  • Why you are supporting DBSC
  • How you are related to DBSC
  • Why you should be released
  • Why others should help you make bail

We will also provide you with a customized e-mail that you can send to your friends and family, inviting them to support you in this event and donate to the cause via your page. When they visit the site, they can use our secure online system to pledge you with their credit card.

More fundraising tips for jailbirds, soon to come.

Do I have to collect the donations from the people who have agreed to pledge me?

Making bail through online pledges is simple and easy. If a donor has made a pledge online, the prisoner does not need to collect anything, the credit card payment will automatically go to DBSC. If a donor prefers to not use the web then the prisoner will need to collect the donation. (Please ensure all checks are made out to DBSC.)

How does DBSC use the funds?

Our goal is to raise $25,000. The funds we raise will go directly to DBSC’s SSP program to increase the number of SSP's and number of hours DB persons can be able to receive per month. A donation of $200 will give the gift of independence through SSP services for one month for one DB person.

How do I make a donation even though I'm not participating in the DBSC Jail-N-Bail?

You can pledge a jailbird or make a general donation to the DBSC Jail-N-Bail online by selecting the "Pledge this Jailbird" link** on a specific prisoners page or visit our donation page by clicking "Donations" on the main menu.

**IMPORTANT: When making your bail pledge please state the name of who you are helping to bail out in the comments box!
