Advocacy Specialist Position
Deaf-Blind Service Center
Seattle, Washington

The Deaf-Blind Service Center (DBSC) is a nonprofit agency that serves Deaf-Blind individuals.  DBSC is currently seeking a motivated individual to fill an Advocacy Specialist position.

Deaf-Blind Advocacy Specialist

Responsibilities:

  1. Manage a busy caseload of Deaf-Blind individuals.  Work with a team of advocates/case managers to provide information and referral, technical assistance and problem solving needed to obtain services from private, city and state agencies.
  2. Educate outside agencies and businesses about Deaf-Blindness through system change advocacy.
  3. Develop and perform individualized goal plans and needs assessments.
  4. Write monthly log-notes, report documentation, and participate in projects.

Required Qualifications:

  1. A minimum of one year experience working and socializing with Deaf-Blind people.
  2. A minimum of two years experience working with people in social services.
  3. Familiarity with state systems and agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Department of Services for the Blind.
  4. Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  5. Diverse communication skills using American Sign Language (ASL), tactile ASL, and written English.
  6. Ability to work successfully with diverse individual clients, families, parents, DBSC staff and outside agency personnel.
  7. Computer skills using Microsoft Windows, Excel, Outlook, the World Wide Web and Internet.

Desirable Qualifications: BA or MA in a related field.  Three years experience working in a nonprofit agency serving Deaf individuals and/or Deaf-Blind people.

Salary:  Depending on experience.  This is a full-time position 1.0 FTE (37 hours a week).  Benefits.
