JOB OPENING

 

The Deaf-Blind Service Center (DBSC) is a nonprofit agency that serves Deaf-Blind individuals.  DBSC is currently seeking a motivated individual to fill an Advocacy Specialist position.

Deaf-Blind Advocacy Specialist

Responsibilities:

1. Manage a busy caseload of Deaf-Blind individuals.  Work with a team of advocates/case managers from outside agencies to provide information and referral, consultation, and problem solving needed to obtain services from private, city and state agencies.

2. Educate outside agencies and businesses about Deaf-Blindness through system change advocacy.

3. Develop and perform individualized goal plans and needs assessments.

4. Travel for some home visits.

5. Write monthly log-notes, report documentation, and participate in projects.

Required Qualifications:

1. A Bachelor’s of Arts or Master’s Degree in Human Services, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field. 

2. A minimum of three year experience working and socializing with Deaf-Blind people and Deaf-Blind senior citizens.

3. A minimum of two years experience working with people in human, health care and social services.

4. Familiarity with state systems and agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, Medicare/Medicaid, and Department of Services for the Blind.

5. Knowledge of various senior citizens issues/needs such as health insurance providers, (Medicaid and Medicare) and retirement.

6. Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and state laws (WAC).

7. Diverse communication skills using American Sign Language (ASL), tactile ASL, and written English.

8. Ability to work successfully with diverse individual clients, families, parents, DBSC staff and outside agency personnel.

9. Computer skills using Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Outlook.

Salary:  Depending on experience.  This is a full-time position 1.0 FTE (37.5 hours a week).  Benefits:  Medical and dental benefits, personal paid leave time and a retirement investment plan.
